Misfit Trailer – A Bridgeable Research Documentary

At some point, everyone knows what it’s like to be apprehensive, insecure and doubtful about achieving our best. But what if you had a health condition that physically stopped you from fully experiencing life and the world around you? People living with obesity must battle against all these elements on a daily basis. Misfit un-packages the experience of living in a world that isn’t designed for you in an inspirational, moving and ultimately empathetic view into overcoming physical and perceptual barriers.

Misfit is the first in a series of internally initiated Research Documentaries by Bridgeable, a Toronto-based company specializing in using design principles to translate deep human understanding into solutions meet real world needs. Through ethnography, Social Scientists and Industrial Designers in consultation with Subject Matter Experts learned how to overcome in-going notions and biases around what the lived environment and design should provide people of all types. Supported by the voices of people with obesity and Healthcare Professionals, the daily lives of an often overlooked population who have difficulties functioning in the current world are brought to life compassionately, bringing their needs to a wider audience and hopefully changing existing biases and misconceptions.

When the film is released in July 2012, the project doesn’t end. It will act as the starting point to discussions around obesity in the modern world through a network of people with obesity, HCPs and anyone who wishes to engage in the dialogue focused on inspiring others to define and solve need issues for those most closely connected to the condition. Misfit also provided deep insights for the development of a bariatric seating line intended to remedy the challenges of the people who feel the world is not designed for them.
